How bicycles boosted the women’s rights movement

With Bike to Work Day approaching (June 28), I share with you a story about bicycles. Susan B. Anthony once said, “Let me tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world.” Why, exactly? The bicycle craze in the late 1800s ushered in a practical dress movement for women, as the previously popular flowing dresses did not exactly jive with bicycle riding. Women started wearing pants to get around, and the rest is history.
