What We Read This Week — June 2, 2017

From net neutrality to the travel planning and purchasing developing on mobile, check out what we read this week.

Telecom Policies May Have Unintended Healthcare Consequences

Unlike nearly every other political issue, net neutrality is bipartisan, and every person reading this needs to pay attention to what’s going on at the FCC. Lobbyists are slowly persuading the right people in Washington that—because ISPs own the pipes—they should get to decide which websites perform/load best. We get to decide which websites perform best, they say. Pay the toll or get throttled. This is a catastrophic problem because in today’s internet-only the best websites win. It’s free-market capitalism at its finest, and our entire economy hinges on the FCC protecting net neutrality—including healthcare. According to our friends at Health Affairs, rural healthcare also needs net neutrality. “Increasingly, telemedicine is being used to bring higher-end healthcare services to remote and rural areas to reduce health disparities. For telemedicine to be scalable and positively impact cost and outcomes, there must be a predictable infrastructure connecting patients, care providers, and technology.”
