Ron, thank you for writing this great story! I have the absolute pleasure of working with these Team Members you sat with that evening. I can't express enough how their passion for life, community and Whole Foods Market is apparent in every single action of theirs, whether at work or "off the clock". They are true ambassadors of our brand, but our brand would mean nothing without them (and everyone we work with). I live in Austin so am envious of the time you had to share with them, but am so touched by what sounds like a great evening of friends and family.

Great Article! I have faith that print will never die. Just recently, my daughter got a handwritten note in the mail from her cousin that was much more special than an email.

Well said Teri. There's just something about the printed word. Walking into my son's elementary school library instantly transports me to a very happy place from my childhood. I inhale my youth again.

Hi Will! Thanks for the comment, and I completely agree with you. Smart small businesses rely on social media to connect with consumers directly, and it would seem counterproductive to set up an automated response system at that level. I do like the idea, however, of larger accounts using Siri-type technology to organize and manage deluge of comments, retweets and other social media responses. I still believe it will be important for the accounts to sound and feel like a human voice, though. Earlier this year when I complained to the @FrontierCare account, I received a very humanized response that actually made me feel better. If I would have gotten some reply that was clearly automated, I think I would have been even more frustrated by the lack of customer service.

I'm curious, have you noticed any accounts that feel 100% automated?

I would imagine that any Twitter account that uses an automated responder will eventually get bitten in the behind for it. The severity on the bite would, however, depend on the company, industry, and use of the account. Could an airline use it for initial responses to customer feedback? Probably with some effectiveness. Would a small business or individual want to use one? Definitely not.
