From Swim Suits to Santa Suits

Karen Johnson 10.10.11 other

There’s been lots of chatter lately about how the holiday shopping window is creeping up and up the calendar. I know a friend who spied tinsel in August. Big box retailers in particular seem to be riding this trend. I’d swear the same clothing rack at BJ’s that sported bathing suits now dons Santa sweatshirts. Retailers like Costco, Home Depot, and Walmart provide prime shelf space for holiday decorations long before my sons start thinking about what to “be” for Halloween. So, the question is naturally begged, what’s the harm in starting early? One could …

It’s not rice with crab!

Lynette Gil 08.29.11 other

We’re having a deep conversation and then I tell you: “porque fue como un arroz con jueyes.” How in the world did our deep, serious conversation turn into something about food? And why rice with crab and not rice and beans or something else, like chicken?

Possible ‘bromance’ between Merriam and Webster?

CJ Powell 08.25.11 other

According to the Associated Press, Merriam-Webster has added a number of noteworthy entries to the latest edition of its Collegiate Dictionary this year.  While some of the recent additions certainly seem necessary (Americana, duathlon and walk-off), others are pretty… surprising. Take, for example, the inclusion of ‘bromance’ — n. a close nonsexual friendship between men. Or Merriam-Webster’s inclusion of ‘cougar’ — n. slang term for a middle-aged woman seeking a romantic relationship with a younger man. Were bromance and cougar critical additions to the Collegiate Dictionary? I suppose it’s debatable. The marketing industry was also awarded some …

I love Klout Perks

CJ Powell 08.08.11 other

Do you know what your Klout score is? Mine is a 41, which makes me an above-average influencer on my social media platforms. Just for reference, Justin Bieber’s score is a perfect 100. Klout is an online tool that helps people — and businesses — measure the “social media influence” of a social media user. Why might that be useful? Well, in addition to having serious inter-office bragging implications, the Klout score can also help businesses reach and/or create influential brand ambassadors through its Klout Perks program. “Klout Perks are exclusive offers or experiences, given …

Iceland: The Land of Fire and Ice… or Facebook and Twitter?

CJ Powell 06.13.11 other

Don’t ask me why, but I’ve always been drawn to Iceland. I adore its tricky name, its distinctive music, its mystic landscapes, and I’m in love with the way the Icelandic talk. When I was hired at Cohn, I almost used my strange fascination with Iceland as my fun fact on my bio page. It should come as no surprise, then, that I giggled to myself when I saw the headline on Mashable today: “Iceland Crowdsources Its Constitution.” Yep. Iceland is apparently turning to social media to enhance its democracy, one Facebook post at a …

RECon 2011—My biggest takeaway, Pt. 4

CJ Powell 06.06.11 other

It’s been a week since RECon 2011 came to a close, and the “socialites” are still talking about Social Media Pavilion. Our team brought eight to Las Vegas to help educate and inform the Retail Real Estate industry about social media, and we had a lot of fun doing it! Speaking with brokers, lawyers, general managers, retail executives and everything in between, our team helped social media beginners better understand how social media can work for their businesses. To give you a quick snapshot of our experience in Las Vegas, we asked the RECon “socialites” to …
